Danish Windmill

Just one hour East from Omaha, Nebraska, and one hour West of Des Moines, Iowa, sits the largest rural Danish settlement in North America, Elk Horn, Iowa. Come tour the only authentic Danish windmill in the United States. Originally built in 1848, this Danish windmill was purchased from a little town called Nørre Snede, Denmark in 1975, dismantled, shipped across the ocean, and reassembled in Elk Horn, Iowa by a team of 300 volunteers, taking just over one year to fully resurrect it. Today it is one of the largest ethnic tourist attractions in Iowa. You can take a guided tour of the windmill which starts with a 15 minute video. Climb to the top and see the shuttered sails, grinding stones, and gearing made of wood and iron cogs. See how it all works together to grind wheat and rye flours as they did over 100 years ago. Shop in the largest Danish import gift shop in North America. Elk Horn is also home to the Danish Immigrant Museum, lovely gift boutiques, cozy bed and breakfasts, antiques, unique gift shops, Danish foods, and a welcoming motel. Six short minutes North of Interstate 80, Exit 54. Call 1-800-451-7472 to set up your trip to Little Denmark, Elk Horn, Iowa. No passport required!
