Julefest in the Danish Villages 2008

"Jul" Love It!

ELK HORN—November 28, 29, and 30, 2008 is the 30th anniversary of the Danish Villages of Elk Horn and Kimballton, Iowa’s Christmas celebration called Julefest 2008. The important elements of a Danish Christmas – good food, warm hospitality, flickering candles and other decorations – will all be a part of this weekend. There are unique shops, specialty stores, a winery, museums, Christmas exhibits and craft fairs for early holiday shopping, as well as many food establishments serving pastries, breads, candies, Danish open faced sandwiches and Danish specialties such as rullepølse. There are over 20 locations offering exquisite one-of-a-kind gifts. Watch for all the live entertainment on the streets of the Danish Villages.
The museums and historic structures welcome visitors with special events and decorations. At the Danish Immigrant Museum, come experience the Danish Julestue and the Danish Julestue Cafe for cookies, glögg, and æbleskiver that you can turn on your own. The historic Danish Windmill built in 1848 and brought to Elk Horn from Denmark piece-by-piece will serve glögg and Danish cheese to visitors and have an old fashioned Julemarket. Bedstemor’s House – Danish for Grandmother’s House – will welcome visitors with a warm fire glowing in the parlor. The parlor’s Christmas tree will be decorated with homemade paper ornaments like Julehjerte, chains, fish, and roses.

The original Boutique & Quilt Sale, “A Prairie Christmas", at the Kimballton Town Hall, represents over 30 folk artists. The Elk Horn Town Hall features Iowa Homespun Crafters at the “Main Street Country Boutique.” Enjoy the many shops and boutiques in both towns – they’re sure to get you in the holiday spirit and help fill your Christmas list!

Both towns will be decorated for Christmas and the streets lined with Danish and American flags. Friday evening, the 28th, will be a “Hyggelig” (cozy) gathering with singing of Christmas carols on Main Street in Elk Horn. Be ready to sample the Better Elk Horn Club's annual pancake supper on Saturday, November 29th at the fire station from 4-7 pm, and then attend the annual Christmas concert at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church at 7 pm. This will be followed by traditional dancing and singing around the Christmas tree. New this year are carriage rides on Friday and Saturday plus the Outlook Study Club is having an exhibit of Christmas Treasures featuring decorated Christmas trees, nativity scenes, table settings and a collection of Santas on main street Elk Horn.

The Kimballton Immanuel Lutheran Church will be having a Danish Luncheon & Bake Sale on Friday from 11 am to 3 pm and Saturday from 11 am to 1 pm. This luncheon has been a favorite for years.
Julefest is a great way for these proud Danes to show off their Danish heritage to their welcomed guests and to celebrate the opening of the Christmas season in the Danish Villages. Pick up a brochure with a map of the local merchants, lodging and happenings at any of the Danish Villages businesses.
