The Windmill Gala & Charity Auction returns this Spring! On April 2nd, we’ll be holding our very first Spring Windmill Gala and Charity Auction. Starting this year, it will coincide with a celebration of the birthday of Hans Christian Andersen, noted Danish author famous for his fairy tales and penchant for storytelling. This year’s theme is The Mill Man in honor of Hans Christian Andersen’s papercuttings.

Better known for his fairy tales, Andersen had a number of paper cut designs that he used to tell stories and spin yarns to children. The Mill Man was one of his creations, and stood for the centrality of the windmill to nineteenth-century Danish life. Such was the story of our own windmill for over a hundred years before it left Denmark for Elk Horn, Iowa in 1976. As the windmill’s story continues and changes, always reinventing its meaning for new generations, we feel that dedicating our day to Andersen’s originality and imagination uniquely captures how the windmill has left its own imprint on our communities. Today, it stands not only as a monument to the dreams of our ancestors, but of our children as well. It is our hope that this event may plant or renew these dreams, and help them grow.

Attendees will enjoy a Danish-inspired meal and have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction. A live auction is held afterwards, and includes a wide range of items, always featuring a unique array of gift baskets, furniture, and décor, handcrafted by talented supporters from surrounding communities.

All proceeds go towards preserving the Danish windmill.
